As you know, I am committed to keeping my customers informed by publishing articles on the procedures available in surgery, as well as current events by distributing a newsletter. A recent publication from the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, founded in 1970, caught my attention regarding global trends related to plastic and aesthetic surgery procedures.
Note that there are two types of procedure. The surgical procedure (augmentation or breast reduction, liposuction ect. .) and non-surgical procedure (hyaluronic acid, peeling, cellulite treatment ect… )
Presentation of ISAPS
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) is the world’s leading professional body for aesthetic plastic surgery certified by the Board of Surgeons. This organization brings together surgeons from more than 117 countries. For more information about this organization you can refer to their website (www.isaps.org)
Presentation of the study
Survey participants completed a questionnaire focused primarily on the number of specific surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2021, as well as some additional questions related to the impact of COVID-19. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) has issued an invitation to approximately 25,000 plastic surgeons. Data from a total of 1,003 plastic surgeons were compiled for this survey. This international survey focuses on doctors who are board-certified plastic surgeons (or national equivalent).
Highlights of the international study on cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2021
According to ISAPS, these results confirm an upward trend in cosmetic surgeries, which have seen an overall increase of 33.3% over the last four years. Note in 2020, cosmetic surgical procedures decreased by 10.9% mainly due to the health crisis.
The most popular surgical procedures
- 1. Liposuction 1,903,063 procedures +24.8%
- 2. Breast augmentation 1,685,471 procedures +3.8%
- 3. Eyelid surgeries 1,446,890 procedures +18.1%
- 4. Rhinoplasty 995,149 procedures +16.7%
- 5. abdominoplasty 991,361 procedures +29.5%
The five most popular surgical procedures in descending order are still liposuction, breast augmentation, Breast augmentation surgeries the eyelid, Rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty. Aesthetic surgical procedures in men
The picture is rather different for men since in first place we find eyelid surgery while for women it is liposuction. Then there is gynecomastia. We can recall here that gynecomastia is the excessive development of the mammary glands in men. My private cosmetic surgery clinic also offers popular procedures for men.

Non-surgical procedures
Botulinum toxin injections are the most popular among both men than in women with seven million three hundred thousand interventions. The report mentions that young people under 18 do not hesitate to use this type of aesthetic treatment. It is the age group of 35 to 50 who most frequently use this type of surgery.
