Trends in cosmetic surgery around the world (part 2)

In a first article on trends in cosmetic surgery in the world I have reported to you the main trends emerging from the ISAPS study carried out in 2021. In this article I presented the methodology to you as well as the institute which carried out the study and the salient points of the document. Today I would like to delve a little deeper into the subject of 2021 trends in cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic surgery procedures by region of the body

The ISAPS study lists statistics into 3 distinct groups.
There is :

  • the face and head area,
  • the mid chest area and
  • the third zone: body and extremities

You can also consult on the dreduclos.com website a interactive “body” map of surgical procedures by following this link from the home page of the cosmetic surgery section.

According to ISAPS statistics, we note an increase of approximately 2,700,000 surgeries in 2021 compared to 2020. The distribution of this increase is mainly localized for facial and head surgeries as well as the lower part of the body.
It is interesting to note that abdominoplasty< /span> and liposuction accounts for approximately 60% of increases in body surgery operations and extremities, i.e. 606,979 more operations than the previous year (see table on page 11). This can be explained by lifestyle habits which, for many people, have been disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also interesting is to note that the breast augmentation remained stable from one year to the next, that the implant removal significantly progressed +53,000 with discount breast +80,637. Finally, the most important progression regarding the chest is the breast lift +186,713.

Non-surgical procedures

The study classifies non-surgical procedures into the following three groups:

The study classifies non-surgical procedures into the following three groups:
1 – procedures with injectable products, (link to section)
2 – procedures for facial rejuvenation (link to section)
3 – and other procedures such as hair removal, cellulite treatment

This is 4 million more non-surgical procedures compared to the previous year worldwide that were performed. This represents an increase of approximately 20%.

1 – Procedures with injectable products

We see that it is botulinum toxin which is the most popular with more than 7 million treatments worldwide in 2021 for an increase of around 1 million additional treatments. I would like to take this opportunity here to remind you that the < span style="color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;">Botox was the first medicine to use botulinum toxin. Other products now include abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc), and incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin). Each is a little different, especially when it comes to dosage, so they are not interchangeable. Botox injections block certain chemical signals in nerves that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox injections are also used to treat conditions that affect the body’s functioning.

It is then the treatment at thehyaluronic acid which is also very popular with a stronger increase than botulinum toxin 1.2 million more. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant (a substance that retains moisture) and is capable of retaining more than a thousand times its weight in water. This substance is found naturally in many areas of the human body, including the skin, eyes, and synovial fluid of the joints. Hyaluronic acid used in beauty and skin care products is mainly made by bacteria via a biofermentation process.
As we age, the production of key substances in the skin, including hyaluronic acid, decreases. As a result, our skin loses volume, hydration and plumpness.

2 – procedures for facial rejuvenation

In these statistics we find the chemical peel that you can get at clinique de rosemont with an increase of approximately 130,000 procedures.
We also note that the institute is starting to count non-surgical facial firming procedures. In recent years, a number of non-surgical procedures have been developed to help tighten the skin on the face or elsewhere on your body using radio frequency, ultrasound and lasers. Although these treatments are not surgical, they should only be performed by a licensed professional and under the supervision of a physician.

3 – other procedures

Finally there is hair removal, cellulite treatment, and non-surgical, minimally invasive options for fat reduction . This includes technology that uses heat or cooling or injected medication to shrink fat cells. Although none of these treatments replace < span style="color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;">liposuction, they provide options for patients who are unwilling or unable to undergo of surgery. Non-surgical fat reduction options use a variety of modalities, including ultrasound, radiofrequency, infrared light, vacuum massage, and injectable medications.

In conclusion, we note that the surgery sector remains very dynamic, whether with surgery or without surgery, with significant increases between 2020 and 2021. We note that it is liposuction (+14.8%) and the increase breast (+13%) record the strongest growth for cosmetic surgeries while for non-surgical procedures it is hyaluronic acid which records the strongest growth (+30%) although this type of treatment is less popular than Botox. It will be my pleasure to welcome you and inform you about the options and treatments available to you.
