In recent years, the landscape of medicine, and particularly aesthetic surgery, has been profoundly transformed by the emergence of new pharmacological tools. Among these, semaglutide, known under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic, has established itself as a major innovation. Initially developed to treat type 2 diabetes, this drug quickly gained popularity for its remarkable effects on weight loss, offering a credible alternative to traditional approaches such as diets, exercise, or bariatric surgery. For aesthetic surgeons, this revolution presents both opportunities and challenges, redefining how patients approach their physical transformation. This article explores this phenomenon, its impact on surgical practice, and its societal implications.

Semaglutide: A Scientific Breakthrough

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists. These molecules mimic a hormone naturally produced by the gut, which plays a key role in regulating blood sugar and appetite. Administered via weekly injection, semaglutide acts on the brain to reduce hunger while slowing gastric emptying, prolonging the feeling of fullness. While Ozempic was initially approved for diabetes management, Wegovy, a higher-dose version, was specifically authorized by health authorities (such as the FDA in the United States in 2021) for obesity management in patients with a high body mass index (BMI) or weight-related comorbidities.

The clinical results are impressive. Studies, such as one published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021, showed that patients on Wegovy lost an average of 15 to 20% of their body weight over a year—a figure far exceeding outcomes from previous pharmacological treatments. For many, this drug represents a viable alternative to bariatric surgery (such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy), an invasive procedure that, while effective, carries risks and requires lifelong follow-up.

A Game-Changer for Patients

For overweight or obese individuals, traditional options—strict diets, exercise programs, or surgical interventions—have not always delivered the desired results. Diets can fail over the long term due to complex biological mechanisms, such as leptin resistance or metabolic adaptations that promote weight regain. Bariatric surgery, though effective, isn’t suitable for everyone: it demands psychological preparation, drastic lifestyle changes, and carries operative risks.s.

Semaglutide changes the game by offering a non-invasive solution accessible to a broader range of patients. For those who, for instance, don’t meet the criteria for bariatric surgery (typically a BMI over 40 or 35 with comorbidities) or fear surgery, this drug provides an opportunity to lose significant weight without going under the knife. This increased accessibility also has a positive psychological effect: it restores hope to patients trapped in a vicious cycle of repeated failures.

Impact on Aesthetic Surgery

As an aesthetic surgeon, I’ve noticed a significant evolution in my practice since the arrival of semaglutide. Traditionally, many patients sought procedures like liposuction, abdominoplasty, or body lifts to address the aftermath of obesity or massive weight loss following bariatric surgery. Today, with semaglutide, the patient profile is shifting. Some arrive after losing 20, 30, or even 40 kilos thanks to the drug, now seeking interventions to address skin laxity or residual fat pockets that the medication couldn’t eliminate.

This new wave of patients presents unique challenges. Unlike the rapid, massive weight loss after bariatric surgery, semaglutide-induced weight loss is more gradual. This can affect skin quality: slower loss sometimes allows better skin retraction, reducing the need for major procedures like body lifts. However, for others—particularly older patients or those with pre-existing excess skin—surgery remains essential. Additionally, some patients on semaglutide report excessive facial volume loss—a phenomenon dubbed “Ozempic face”—leading them to consult for fillers or facelifts.

A Societal Revolution

Beyond the medical sphere, semaglutide raises societal and ethical questions. Its meteoric rise has fueled debates about body perception, obesity stigma, and healthcare access. In the United States, for example, Wegovy’s high cost (over $1,000 per month without insurance) limits accessibility, creating a divide between those who can afford it and those who cannot. In Europe, where public healthcare systems play a larger role, authorities are still hesitant to widely reimburse the drug for weight loss, often reserving it for the most severe medical cases.

Moreover, semaglutide’s popularity has been amplified by social media and celebrities, driving demand sometimes fueled by unrealistic beauty standards rather than health needs. This puts aesthetic surgeons in a delicate position: meeting these expectations while avoiding overmedicalization.

Future Perspectives

The arrival of semaglutide is just the beginning of a wave of new obesity treatments. Other molecules, like tirzepatide (Mounjaro), promise even more striking results, with weight loss exceeding 20%. These advances could further reduce reliance on bariatric surgery and alter the indications for aesthetic surgery. In the long term, they might encourage a more integrated approach to weight loss, combining pharmacology, psychological support, and, when necessary, targeted surgical interventions.

For aesthetic surgeons, adaptation is key. This means understanding the specific needs of patients on semaglutide, anticipating side effects (like skin laxity or volume loss), and offering tailored solutions. While this revolution disrupts established practices, it also provides an opportunity to rethink patient care holistically, prioritizing their well-being.

Conclusion

Semaglutide, in its Ozempic and Wegovy forms, has undeniably transformed the fields of weight loss and, by extension, aesthetic surgery. By offering an effective, less invasive alternative to bariatric surgery, it redefines patients’ journeys and their expectations for their bodies. For practitioners, it’s both a challenge and an opportunity: to support a new generation of patients in their quest for physical and emotional transformation. As science continues to evolve, one thing is clear: semaglutide is not a passing trend but a turning point in our approach to obesity and body aesthetics.

Canada’s position on semaglutide, including its marketed forms Ozempic and Wegovy, is defined by the approvals and regulations of Health Canada, the federal agency responsible for evaluating and authorizing drugs. Here is a detailed overview of this position as of February 22, 2025, based on available information and recent developments in the use of semaglutide:

Approval and indications

Ozempic (low-dose semaglutide):

Ozempic was approved by Health Canada in 2018 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is administered at a maximum dose of 1 mg per week and is intended to improve glycemic control in adults with this condition. Although weight loss is a common side effect, its use for this purpose is not officially approved in Canada and is considered an “off-label” use.

Wegovy (high-dose semaglutide):

Wegovy, which contains a higher dose of semaglutide (2.4 mg per week), was approved by Health Canada in November 2021 specifically for chronic weight management. It is indicated as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults with:

A body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obese), or

A BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, or obstructive sleep apnea.

Wegovy became available on the Canadian market in May 2024, after years of delays related to global shortages and high demand.

Regulation and Access

Public Coverage: In Canada, drug coverage varies across provinces and public and private insurance plans. Ozempic is generally reimbursed for type 2 diabetes under certain conditions (e.g., after failure of other treatments), but not for weight loss. Wegovy, as an obesity-specific treatment, is not yet widely covered by public plans, as obesity is often considered a “low priority” condition compared to other chronic diseases. Patients are therefore often required to pay out-of-pocket or rely on private insurance, which limits access due to its high cost (approximately CA$200–300 per month for Ozempic, and potentially more for Wegovy).

Shortages and Supply Management: The growing popularity of semaglutide, amplified by its use for weight loss (often publicized by influencers), has led to shortages, particularly for Ozempic. This has raised concerns about access for diabetic patients who rely on them. The Canadian government, through Health Canada and the Department of Health, is monitoring the situation to ensure that supplies are prioritized for approved indications.

Societal and Medical Position

Recognition of Obesity as a Chronic Disease: The approval of Wegovy reflects an evolution in the recognition of obesity as a serious medical condition requiring specific treatments, not just lifestyle changes. Obesity Canada, an influential organization, hailed the approval as a “paradigm shift,” noting that semaglutide offers results similar to bariatric surgery, but with less invasiveness.

Ethical and Social Challenges: The off-label use of Ozempic for weight loss has sparked debate. Some experts are concerned about overmedicalization or an excessive focus on aesthetics rather than health, while others point to the potential benefits in reducing obesity-related complications (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.).

Surveillance and Safety

Health Canada continues to monitor semaglutide for side effects, including rare risks such as pancreatitis (1 in 1,000 cases per year) or gallstones (approximately 1% increased risk). Poison centre data in some provinces, such as Ontario and Quebec, have reported an increase in calls related to adverse events (nausea, accidental overdose), although these numbers remain limited and do not always distinguish between use for diabetes and weight loss.

Conclusion

Canada’s position on semaglutide is clear: it is recognized as a valuable tool for diabetes (Ozempic) and obesity management (Wegovy), with formal Health Canada approvals. However, access to semaglutide remains hampered by issues of cost, coverage, and availability, while off-label use for weight loss raises logistical and ethical concerns. The country is taking a cautious but gradual approach, integrating the drug into a broader strategy to combat obesity while ensuring that diabetic patients who need it are protected. This position could change with the arrival of new treatments or adjustments in reimbursement policies.

As you know, I am committed to keeping my customers informed by publishing articles on the procedures available in surgery, as well as current events by distributing a newsletter. A recent publication from the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, founded in 1970, caught my attention regarding global trends related to plastic and aesthetic surgery procedures.
Note that there are two types of procedure. The surgical procedure (augmentation or breast reduction, liposuction ect. .) and non-surgical procedure (hyaluronic acid, peeling, cellulite treatment ect… )

Presentation of ISAPS

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) is the world’s leading professional body for aesthetic plastic surgery certified by the Board of Surgeons. This organization brings together surgeons from more than 117 countries. For more information about this organization you can refer to their website (www.isaps.org</ a>)

Presentation of the study

Survey participants completed a questionnaire focused primarily on the number of specific surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2021, as well as some additional questions related to the impact of COVID-19. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) has issued an invitation to approximately 25,000 plastic surgeons. Data from a total of 1,003 plastic surgeons were compiled for this survey. This international survey focuses on doctors who are board-certified plastic surgeons (or national equivalent).

Highlights of the international study on cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2021

According to ISAPS, these results confirm an upward trend in cosmetic surgeries, which have seen an overall increase of 33.3% over the last four years. Note in 2020, cosmetic surgical procedures decreased by 10.9% mainly due to the health crisis.

The term “Ozempic face” has become a buzzword in recent years, especially since the use of the drug Ozempic — the brand name for semaglutide — has exploded. Originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, Ozempic has garnered considerable attention for its off-label use as a weight-loss aid. The drug, given as weekly injections, mimics a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which regulates appetite and slows digestion. The result? Significant weight loss for many users, often in a relatively short period of time. But this rapid transformation comes with an unexpected side effect that has captured the public’s attention: a sunken, gaunt facial appearance, dubbed “Ozempic face.” The phenomenon has sparked debates about aging, beauty standards, and the growing role of cosmetic procedures like injections. to remedy this.

What does the term “Ozempic face” mean exactly?

“Ozempic face” refers to the facial changes that can occur when a person loses a lot of weight quickly, whether with Ozempic or by other means. The fat under the skin, especially in the face, provides volume and youthful contours. When this fat is lost quickly, the skin doesn’t always have time to adjust, leading to sagging, sunken cheeks, more pronounced wrinkles and a generally older appearance. For Ozempic users, this effect can be particularly pronounced because the drug’s mechanism targets overall fat reduction without distinction between the body and the face. Dr. Duclos has seen an increase in patients looking for solutions to this unintended consequence, often in their 30s, 40s and 50s — ages when natural collagen and elasticity begin to diminish.

Between Dream and Reality: A Dream Body for an Emaciated Face

This is not a new concept linked only to Ozempic. Rapid weight loss due to extreme dieting or illness has long been known to alter facial structure.

What is different today is the scale and visibility of the phenomenon. Celebrities and influencers who openly talk about their use of Ozempic — or its cousin Wegovy — have propelled “Ozempic face” into the spotlight. Social media is full of before and after photos, some praising slimmer bodies, others lamenting hollow faces. The cultural obsession with thinness, coupled with the availability of a drug that promises quick results, has created a perfect storm: people achieve their dream body, only to discover that their face no longer fits the ideal.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections as a Solution

This is where aesthetic fillers come in, the preferred solution for many who undergo “Ozempic face.” Dermal fillers, typically composed of hyaluronic acid, are injectable substances that restore volume in areas such as the cheeks, under the eyes, and jawline. Popular for years as a non-surgical way to combat aging, their use has surged with the rise of weight-loss medications.

Dr. Duclos sees patients who present with complaints such as: “I love my new body, but my face looks tired” or “I lost weight, but now I look ten years older.” Fillers offer a quick, minimally invasive solution, restoring volume to the skin to mimic the fullness lost with fat.

The Importance of Using an Experienced Surgeon

But fillers aren’t without their complications. The procedure requires skill — an overzealous injector can leave a swollen or frozen appearance, while undertreatment may not fully correct the hollowing. The surgeon will be able to determine whether it’s best to do a mini-facelift with short incisions or to do filler injections, or sometimes a combination of both, to optimize the result.

Medical or cultural problem?

Fictional person

The rise of the “Ozempic face” and the accompanying filler craze also shines a light on societal attitudes toward aging and beauty. Losing weight is often presented as a universal good—healthier, more attractive, more disciplined. Yet when the face no longer matches youthful ideals, the same people who praised weight loss may criticize the “aged” appearance. This double standard has fueled debates about whether the “Ozempic face” is a medical or cultural problem. Some argue that it’s a small price to pay for the benefits of weight loss, especially for those with obesity-related conditions. Others see it as evidence of unbridled vanity, with people pursuing thinness at the expense of their natural features, only to turn to another needle to repair the damage.

Societal pressure

Fictional person

Women, who are under disproportionate pressure to stay young and thin, make up a large portion of Ozempic users and filler customers. Men are not immune—many have embraced the drug and its aesthetic consequences—but the discourse around “Ozempic face” often focuses on women who walk the fine line of beauty standards. A 40-year-old woman might lose 30 pounds and feel triumphant, only to look in the mirror and see her cheekbones are too pronounced. Fillers then become less of a luxury and more of a corrective measure, a way to regain the face society expects.

Not everyone rushes to get hyaluronic acid injections, however. Some embrace their new appearance, seeing the slimness as a symbol of their transformation. Others are opting for less invasive solutions—skin-care routines, facial exercises, or even clever makeup to fake lost volume.

Bottom Line

The “Ozempic face” phenomenon and the wave of fillers it has sparked continue to evolve. As more people experiment with semaglutide, researchers are studying its long-term effects—not just on weight, but on skin and aging. The interplay between these injections—Ozempic in the body, fillers in the face—offers a fascinating glimpse into how we manipulate our biology to accommodate our desire for better health. Whether a passing fad or a lasting change, “Ozempic face” has undeniably entered the cultural conversation, one syringe at a time.

Buttock augmentation by fat grafting is a cosmetic surgery operation which consists of taking fat (liposuction) from parts of the body that we wish to slim and injecting it (lipofilling) into the buttocks.
This operation has the double advantage of refining the abdomen, thighs, back or hips while increasing and more generously reshaping the sag of the kidneys.

Also called gluteal remodeling, lipofilling or “Brazilian butt lift”, this procedure first became popular in Brazil where the buttocks have always been considered the main asset of femininity.
But the importance of the buttocks in the aesthetics of the silhouette does not start at the beaches of Rio. Already in antiquity, this part of the body received homage from poets and sculptors. A slender waist overlooking a beautiful rounded and toned buttocks has evoked, since the dawn of time, youth, beauty and fertility.

Two different gluteoplasty techniques

A gluteoplasty (buttock augmentation) can be performed using silicone buttock implants or by fat injection. Fat injection is a less invasive procedure than implant placement; it is also faster and less painful. If implants add tone to the gluteal muscles, lipofilling provides natural-looking volume and rounding. This operation is performed on both men and women. Mainly aesthetic, it can also be restorative in cases of accident, asymmetry, hemiplegia, etc.

Who can benefit from buttock lipofilling?

Buttock augmentation by fat transfer is a surgical procedure which consists of modifying the volume and curve of the buttocks while enhancing them when they are considered underdeveloped, sagging or flat, whether from birth or following a pregnancy, weight loss or aging.
However, the ideal candidate should not be too thin: they must have enough excess fat in other parts of the body to allow liposuction. Otherwise, he or she will have to gain a few kilos before the procedure or move towards the placement of implants. As for the overweight patient, it will be up to the surgeon to determine whether it is desirable for him to lose weight before the operation.

Before treatment

A preoperative assessment will be drawn up by the surgeon after checking the patient’s medical, surgical and family history. Doctor and patient will be able to discuss in depth the desired result (volume, curve and projection), the stages of the surgery and the associated risks. Smokers are generally advised to stop smoking 2 months before the procedure to improve the uptake of fat grafts, thanks to better vascularization. We also recommend stopping oral contraception 1 month before the procedure, to reduce the risk of thromboembolism.

Contraindications

Buttock augmentation by fat injection is contraindicated in cases of:
heart disorders
pulmonary disorders
neurological disorders
noticeable thinness with inability to gain weight
certain other health conditions

Procedure sequence

The process is simple: fat is taken from the patient and, after being washed and purified via a filtration system, it is injected using fine cannulas into the fatty tissue and the muscle of the buttock (gluteus maximus). ). The effect is instantaneous. The muscle is very rich in blood vessels, which makes it possible to effectively nourish the fat grafts, and therefore to reduce the resorption of the injected fat. This is a 100% natural method since it does not involve any foreign bodies. We reinject on average 300cc of fat.

General or local anesthesia

The anesthesia is generally local, or with sedation, in which case the return home takes place the same day. However, some surgeons opt for general anesthesia.

The Mommy Make Over procedure Literally translated as “Mommy Makeover Surgery” is a combination of plastic surgery procedures, custom-designed to restore your pre-baby body following the changes caused by pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.

This procedure can also be beneficial for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or anyone looking to treat several more or less critical conditions at the same time.

After pregnancy, a woman’s body is often left with sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, separated abdominal muscles and fascia that no amount of exercise can rebuild.

“Mommy Makeover Surgery” can help reverse the effects of childbirth, as well as feelings of helplessness about the appearance of your own body.”

For many moms, this can be a major milestone after giving birth

What is Included in the Mommy Makeover Procedure?

Dr. Duclos will customize the Mommy Makeover Plastic Surgery procedure based on your unique needs. Note that the procedure typically includes these procedures:

A abdominoplasty, sometimes combined with a diastasis recti repair

This may also involve a belly button lift.

Breast Enhancement

A breast augmentation to replace the volume lost

Breast lift, if applicable

Or a breast reduction, to reduce the size of the breasts

Any breast surgery may also include areola reduction or nipple surgery.

Your treatment plan may also include:

Liposuction to reshape the body

A Brazilian butt lift, with or without hip augmentation.

Perineal rejuvenation procedures, such as perineoplasty

A labiaplasty to improve the appearance of the labia minora.

Given her extensive experience, Dr. Duclos will be able to tell you about all the available procedures and the differences in surgical technique.

The Pros and Cons of Mommy Makeover Surgery

Pros

Addresses a range of post-pregnancy issues in a single surgery and recovery period.

Transformative results, returning your body to its pre-pregnancy state, and often even better.

Many patients report feeling more like themselves and gaining confidence.

Stretch marks and cesarean section scars can be eliminated, diminished, or improved with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

It can also help treat midline separation of the abdominal muscles by repairing diastasis recti and hernias. This can help improve posture and potentially reduce some back pain.

Cons

There is a recovery period that can be painful.

Tummy tucks and breast lifts cause scars that usually fade over time.

Depending on the procedure performed, a recovery period should be planned that requires convalescence, time off work, and time off the gym.

You will need assistance with daily activities and should avoid lifting heavy objects (including small children) for at least the first week of recovery.

Body contouring procedures, such as tummy tucks and liposuction, do not protect against future weight gain.
You will still need to stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise to maintain your results.

The surgery does leave scars, including a low scar from hip to hip from the tummy tuck.

How Much Does Mommy Makeover Surgery Cost?

The cost of a mommy makeover depends on the complexity of your procedure, the experience level of your plastic surgeon, their practice location, and a few other key factors.

This is considered elective cosmetic surgery, so it will not be covered by insurance. However, if your surgery includes a hernia repair or breast reduction, insurance may cover some of these costs.

Patient Profile

Ideal mommy makeover patients are:

In good general health.

Within 25 pounds of your ideal body weight. Surgeons’ BMI rules and restrictions tend to vary, so it’s best to schedule a consultation to discuss specific weight concerns.

Be at a stable weight. It’s also best not to schedule this surgery too soon after having a baby, as tempting as it may be. This also helps your surgeon accurately assess what your body looks like at its core.

Non-smokers. Smoking, vaping, and using cannabis can inhibit healing, so if you smoke, your surgeon will likely ask you to quit at least two weeks before your surgery and three weeks after.

During your initial consultation, be honest about your health status to reduce your risk of complications.

How long does it take to do a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy makeover surgeries take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours, depending on how many procedures you have done, how complex they are, and your surgeon’s technique.

There is a limit to the number of procedures most surgeons will perform at one time, for your safety. It is generally recommended that elective procedures take no more than 6 hours, and a full tummy tuck alone can take up to 3 hours.

You will also want to plan to arrive about an hour early, so that they can prep and administer anesthesia, and expect to spend a few hours in a recovery room, so they can monitor you and allow you to go home safely.

Make sure you have someone you trust to drop you off, get you home safely, and spend the first night after surgery at home, in case you need assistance.

Are there any risks with the Mommy Makeover procedure?

Mommy makeovers are considered safe in the hands of an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, every procedure carries some risk, and those risks increase when procedures are combined and the surgery lasts a long time.

When you discuss your treatment plan during your consultation, Dr. Duclos will confirm that your surgery will last no longer than six hours.

Abdominoplasty has the highest potential for complications, with double the complication rate of other cosmetic surgeries—3% versus 1.5%—according to a 2015 study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The most common major complication was hematoma.

Will you have scars?

All surgeries leave scars at the incision sites, but Dr. Duclos strives to place the scars in a way that is well hidden.

They will also fade over time.

How long do the results of Mommy Makeover surgery last?

Mommy Makeover results last a lifetime as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a stable weight. Of course, the aging process continues such as skin elasticity, sagging, etc.

Breast implants are not considered lifelong devices, so they may need to be replaced in the future, but they do not automatically need to be replaced.

1. Tumor removal

Tumor removal retains its top spot. This procedure removes abnormal growths or masses that may be cancerous, including skin cancer, or benign. A skilled plastic surgeon removes the tumor while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact. Tumor removal not only addresses the patient’s immediate health concerns, but also leads to better long-term outcomes and improved quality of life.

2. Hand Surgery

Hand surgery has moved up three spots to reach number two in the Top 5. This procedure is a specialized area of plastic surgery that treats and rehabilitates conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and forearm, such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and trigger finger.

3. Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction appears in the Top 5 for the first time. This procedure restores the shape of the breasts after a mastectomy and has been shown to improve self-esteem and contribute to a positive body image after a breast cancer diagnosis, treatments, or other medical conditions.

4. Maxillofacial

Maxillofacial remains fourth on the Top 5 list. This reconstructive surgery restores both form and function to one of the most visible features of the body: the face and jaw. It restores or improves essential functions such as speech, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.

5. Scar Revision

Scar revision drops two spots in the Top 5. Scars can affect a person physically, functionally, and psychologically. Plastic surgeons can minimize the visibility of scars and improve their texture, giving the skin a more natural appearance. Scar revision can also improve mobility and relieve discomfort.

Discover the top five cosmetic surgery procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2022 report. Each year, thousands of people choose to improve their appearance and confidence by opting for these innovative and safe procedures.

These procedures are chosen not only for their aesthetic effects, but also for their ability to improve patients’ quality of life. If you are considering a personal transformation, consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and options.

1. Liposuction
Liposuction takes the top spot for the second consecutive year. Liposuction sculpts the body by removing excess fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, back, or neck, to improve contour and create a more proportionate appearance. Liposuction removes stubborn, unwanted fat that diet and exercise can’t eliminate.

2. Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, making it back into the Top 5. This procedure enhances the size and shape of the breasts using implants to correct small, uneven, or disproportionate breasts. Breast augmentation has been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures since 2006.

3. Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty continues to be a favorite procedure, holding a spot in the Top 5 for a second year. The abdominal area is tightened and reshaped with this surgery to improve waist definition and give a slimmer appearance. A tummy tuck can help transform loose or sagging skin, remove excess fat, and tighten abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck is also called a “tummy tuck” and can be part of a “mommy makeover” treatment that combines a breast lift and abdominoplasty.

4. Breast lift (mastopexy)
Breast lift is back in the Top 5 for the second time in a row. This procedure repositions the breasts to reduce sagging, low volume, and downward-pointing nipples. It does not change the size of the breasts but can help improve symmetry and create a more balanced appearance. This often includes combination procedures such as a mommy makeover.

5. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery is back in the Top 5 this year. Eyelid surgery removes excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper or lower eyelids (sometimes both) to reduce sagging or puffiness around the eyes, giving them a refreshed appearance. Blepharoplasty has become very popular due to teleworking since the face is put forward and blepharoplasty helps reduce the effect of fatigue and helps rejuvenate the face.

What is rectus diastasis?

Diastasis rectus abdominis, also called diastasis recti, is a condition in which the rectus abdominal muscles separate along the midline of the abdomen. This creates a space or gap between the muscles, which can give the appearance of a hollow or bulging stomach.

Diastasis occurs when there is relaxation of the abdominal wall, the muscles are weak due to lack of training or following trauma or surgery. Generally diastasis is caused by pregnancy especially a twin pregnancy, as the expansion of the uterus can create pressure on the abdominal muscles. However, diastasis can also occur in men and women who have never been pregnant. Other risk factors include significant weight gain, obesity, advanced age which can cause muscle weakness and abdominal wall distension. Physical activities that overuse the abdominal muscles can also cause diastasis.

Symptoms of rectus diastasis

There are several reasons why a person may choose to have rectus diastasis surgery:

Why is it necessary to have rectus diastasis surgery?

Reduce symptoms: Diastasis rectus can cause chronic pain in the abdominal area, posture problems and muscle weakness. Surgery can help reduce these symptoms by repairing weakened abdominal muscles.

Improve Appearance: Diastasis rectus can also cause the abdominal wall to bulge or protrude, giving the appearance of a “buoy” belly. Surgery can help flatten the stomach and improve the overall appearance of the abdominal area.

Restore abdominal function: Diastasis rectus can weaken the abdominal muscles, which can impact the person’s ability to perform daily movements and activities. Surgery can help restore strength and function to the abdominal muscles.

Repair damage caused during multiple pregnancies: Diastasis recti is common after pregnancy, especially after multiple pregnancies. Surgery can help repair damage to abdominal muscles during pregnancy.

Diastasis treatment of the rectus abdominis is usually performed during an abdominoplasty.

How is rectus diastasis surgery carried out?

The surgical procedure to correct diastasis recti is performed under general anesthesia and may require hospitalization for a few days. Here is how the rectus diastasis treatment generally takes place in surgery:

1. Preparation: The patient is prepared in the operating room, and the anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia to ensure comfort and freedom from pain during the procedure.

2. Incisions: the surgeon makes incisions on the abdominal wall, usually horizontally above the pubis. The size and location of the incisions may vary depending on the specific needs of the patient.

3. Muscle repair: Once the incisions are made, the surgeon identifies the rectus abdominis muscles and brings them together using sutures or stitches. This step helps reduce the gap and strengthen the muscles.

4. Excess skin: If necessary, the surgeon can also remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall to achieve a smoother, toned contour.

5. Closing the incisions: Once muscle repair and removal of excess skin is complete, the surgeon closes the incisions using sutures or surgical staples.

6. Recovery: after surgery, the patient is monitored in the recovery room to ensure their stability. Pain medications may be given to ease post-operative discomfort.

7. Postoperative Care: The patient is usually encouraged to rest and recover at home for several weeks after surgery. Follow-up consultations are planned to check the condition of the incisions and to assess the progress of healing.

It is important to note that each patient is unique and the procedure may vary depending on individual needs. It is therefore essential to consult Dr. Duclos for specific information on the procedure and postoperative care. Diastasis rectus surgery is generally considered a cosmetic procedure and is not always covered by health insurance.

In some cases, specific rehabilitation exercises can help reduce the space between muscles and strengthen the abdominal wall. In more severe cases or if symptoms persist, surgery may be necessary to repair the abdominal muscles.
